I just wanted to say that I LOVE YOU. I don't know what else to say or do. It's been 10 months now, and it still seems like yesterday that you were taken away. I wish I knew why, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about how much I miss you. Why you?

I only knew Scott for a short time but I enjoyed two months of basic recruit training for Howard County Police(Academy 23) with Scott. I can say that God placed Scott in my life for a reason. I have never met such a fun loving person who lived each day to the fullest like Scott did. When everyone else was worried or anxious about a test or scenario, Scott was always seen laughing and smiling. I will always remember the smile he put on everyones faces, especially mine. Scott, you are missed and will never be forgotten for only hero's and legends live forever. To the family of Scott, We love you and God Bless.

I know I am horribly late, but I am just realizing that I knew you for years. I remember hearing of your death and thinking that I knew you once, but never thought more of it. Tonight I was researching some Old Mill HS friends in the class of 1994, and stumbled across a blog about your memorial. I looked you up and took one look at your picture on the memorial site and my heart sank. I did some more reserach and realized that I went to Southgate with you, Old Mill Middle with you, and Old Mill High school with you, and even was at AACC the same time you were getting your CJ degree. ( I graduated in Dec 99) Wow... such a small world and I feel so bad that I didn't get it sooner. I wanted to be at your funeral. I wanted to say goodbye. Sure, we weren't close friends, but our souls followed the same parallel paths for years and years, that must have significance. I pray for the family and the new wife you left behind. May God continue to give them strength and boundless love!!

Dear Scott,
I miss you alot! I got a memorial tattoo and I think you would like it. It's a rose on my shoulder, in one leaf there's your four digit and in the other is June 18, 2007. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you, Tracy and your family. My 2 1/2 year old has taken to looking at your picture and pointing towards the ceiling, smiling. I miss you and still hear your laughter !!! Sudi

Every day on my way to work, I pass the sign memorializing you and think how sad and needless your death was; you guys are out on the roads to help us. The only thing I can do is to drive in a manner that doesn't goad other people into driving faster. Actions have consequences.

scott,

I still can't believe you are gone. Tracy, your mom and dad and brother are all hanging in there, some days by a thread. Same with all your friends and extended family. I know you are keeping a close eye on all of us, we really need it. And we are trying our best, especialy Kristin and Aaron, to keep a close eye on Tracy. I know you would have done the same for them, you were so wonderful with all of us when we went through all that with Kristin and Kaleigh. Everyone has so many happy memories of you, especially that laugh!!! I just read that when you find a penny on the ground, it is from angels, letting loved ones know they miss them and are thinking of them. We will be looking for some pennies!!!

We love and miss you.

Scott,
Even though the New Years Eve that you proposed to me at Aaron and Kristin's house wasn't our "official" anniversary, you always made a point to take off of work to be with me. Last night wasn't the same without you, and never will be. Well, I thought it would only be right to be where we had a lot of great New Years Eve's together, and we lit off some pretty big fireworks in memory of you. You would have been loving it, and I would have probably been yelling at you to be careful. It is a New Year, but I will never stop loving you. ~Forever Wheeler~

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Corporal Wheeler. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Scott, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Scott's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Scott's life was about so much more than the way he died. Scott will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Corporal Wheeler, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Scotty,

I'm sittin over here at Dobbin working and I was thinkin about ya. You used to sit here alot. So many little things that remind us all of you. Its still really hard to believe your gone. Really miss ya. I remember the last time I saw you. It was the night before the accident. I was working and came to the AMC Theatre at the end of my shift. I remember you coming over and you were laughing like always. You said to me, better get home soon cuz its gettin dark outside. Then you said nightshift is for the big boys and not little girls. We laughed and made fun of each other. I never thought it would be the last time I'd get to see you. I'm thankful to GOD for allowing me the opportunity to get to know you.....

You were a brother a friend and a wonderful police officer....I miss you makin fun of me...I miss workin with ya because it was always a funny experience...Thinking of you always brings a tear but ends with a smile because I can always remember so many funny crazy things you did, and who can forget that laugh of yours....Keep lookin out for us from up there...Tracy and the Family.....Thank You so much for Scotty......and my prayers are with you guys...

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Tracy

I met you at the MD COPS retreat 2 weekends ago in OC. You and I have both lost loved ones this year (my brother was a cop in NH EOW 5/11/07) and I am sorry we have this in common. I thought the retreat was so powerful, as it gave me one more small step towards closure and I hope it did the same for you. I am sure we will see each other in D.C in May. Pay it forward each and every day. It makes a world of difference and feels good!

Scott,

I am sorry to say that I did not know you. I was pretty new on that tragic day. I have a lot of friends in the police family that were very close to you and there is not a day that goes by that one of them does not mention your name. We worked out of southern for 2 months while they renovated our center and I had to drive by where your accident was every day. I wanted to cry every time I saw the corss. It would have been nice to meet you if your were still here because from the sounds of it you were such a great guy. I am sure we would have found you in dispatch joking around with us!

I had the pleasure of meeting your wife and I did not know what to say to her but she she made it so easy. I could see why you fell in love with her because she was just the kind of person you would want to love. I pray for her and your family every day. Tracy and your family are being well looked after by everyone in your police family. They are keeping your memory very alive for them. I only wish I had met you. This tragic lose has made me realize how much I love working for the Howard County Police family. Everyone truly looks after each other. Rest in peace...........your brothers got it covered down here.

Scotty,

We brought home our baby boy today. In your memory he arrived at our house in full Oakland Raiders apparel. I just thought you would get a kick out of that. I still can't beleive that you are not coming home. Why did this happen? I miss you so much Scott. I struggle to find strength to make it through each day without you. Despite how difficult your death has been to deal with, you would be so proud and honored to know about all of the support that I have gotten from our friends and from the Police Dept. They have been so great, and I don't think I could have gotten this far without them. I know that you always wanted the best for me. You worked so hard to make sure of that. So for that sake, I am trying to keep my head up and to be strong for your parents. I am going to Oakland next week, it won't be the same without you, but then again nothing is the same without you. I miss you so much...I Love you xoxoxo

We will never forgot all the crazy and good times together. Your memories are so strong and vivid. I have a close eye on Tracy for you. We had lots of wonderful times together, I can remember the first time we met i was ony 15 years old, i thought you were the craziest person i have ever met. We had so much fun together the four of us, and lots of great memories. I was so happy when you finally found the woman of your dreams, you were so happy with Tracy, She made you so happy and i'm sure you made her happy as well. I really enjoyed the times we all got to share together as adults, taking all the trips to O.C.. I know my girls enjoyed being around you and Tracy also, they had so much fun when you were around. They still talk about your silly laugh that you had, i miss it to. It has been hard around our home when we think about you, (daily). The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
for the judgment of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
you’ve born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
you’ve done your time in hell"

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers, thank you for your service and dedication to the law enforcement field, its men and women like you that make everyday a better plac to live.

What can be said about Scott? Scott was a great policeman, and an even better friend. Before Scott entered the force, we went to Old Mill togather, we lost contact for a few years, but were reunited when his father started having his vehicles serviced by my father. Scott walked into the garage one night and said to me "I remember you, we used to party in your basement when your parents were away". Thanks for ratting me out Scott! LOL

We miss you Scott, you died doing what you loved, and all of us are safer because of it. Rest in peace, and know that you are missed.

One month ago today, our world changed forever...life for the members of the Howard County Police Department Family will never be the same again...we have suffered a devastating loss.

S - Sorrow beyond words that you were taken from us so suddenly, so tragically

C - Courage to go on without you and continue to Fight The Good Fight

O - Optimism and the hope that a horrible accident like this will never happen again to any law enforcement officer

T - Tears for you that will never end, but will subside with the passage of time

T - Thoughts of you that will also never end, but will grow more fond and precious with the passage of time

From our Earthly perspective, you have gone. But from Heaven's perspective, you have arrived - whole, complete, perfect - and forever safe.

Your gift to us was your friendship, your contagious laughter and that smile of yours! Our gift to you will be to continue to honor your love of the job and your incredible work ethic.

Your legacy is that you will forever be a proud example of HCPD's finest. You are a shining example of what a great cop is, both personally and professionally.

Please watch over your fellow officers - and be everyone's perpetual Ride-Along.

(And Scott, from your lips to God's ear, if the Oakland Raiders win the Super Bowl next year, we will all know the real reason why!)

Thank you, Scott, for the privilege and pleasure of knowing you and working with you.

Rest in Peace, our Brother in Blue.

"The Prayer"

We pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go
And help us to be wise, in times when we don't know

To the family and friends of our Scott Wheeler:

I knew another officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice and I visit his reflection page often, there is a wonderful story in there about Steve Gaughan and Scott Wheeler that is worth taking a look at. I don't think they ever knew each other but this story is great. There is no need to mention much detail to find it....WHEN U SEE IT...YOU WILL KNOW WHAT I MEAN! Just thought i'd pass that along to put a smile on the face of anyone who checks it out.

Scott was always Mike’s little brother to me
The brotherly love was easy to see
When they were together the laughter was loud
Their antics would usually attract a crowd

Even though I only met Scott a few times years ago
I did know him well inside because of his alter ego
I worked with Mike for many years at the firm
He talked about Scott often and of him I did learn

When I heard the evening news that one dreadful day
I realized immediately this was Mike’s little brother, taken away
I thought, how devastating this would be
To my friend Mike, and his family

Sad, tragic, terrible, untimely, the words go on and on
No matter what, he is really gone
So let’s be strong and try not to cry
‘Cause Scott is ok, up in the big, blue sky

Scott had a great life, albeit not long
But it is true, his memory will remain strong
The good times are what mean the most
So cheers to Scott, to you I toast!!

Scott,
We never went out or made it to that Nascar race in the 3 + yrs of workin in your platoon and in the 6 1/2 yrs at the dpt. I wish I got to know you more before transferring from P-3. It took me this long to write and I finally lost it while viewing pictures and reading other reflections just the other day. I pulled up your picture at home and my 2 yr-old pointed to it and said "daddy". I quickly argued that it was you but she still protested. Then I remembered how we shared stories about our similarities and how other officers, citizens, and judges, etc got us mixed up... like when my brother approached your old car at a concert years ago, thinking it was me, he started to ask you what you got the car. I always reminded you and everyone that I was the better looking one, LOL, but I was jokin. No one is referring to me as "Scott" or Wheeler" anymore, but when I see my reflection, I will always see you, forever! But one thing is for sure, you're the better person and officer!!
I'll never forget when you were about to recieve one of your 1st POM awards and while leaving the SD in my sleepiness, Tom and Jenn stopped me in the parking lot and escorted me back in to see you receive the award. Then not long before leaving the platoon I called out with a traffic stop involving 2 robbery suspects. You arrived and took control and found two firearms in the vehicle.
-Still prayin for your family and pals, Scott!

Tracy will remain a close friend, we will always be here to support you. A dog of ours, named Bear, was a great fan of Scott's. Bear passed away in February 2007. I know they are looking after each other in Heaven.

well what can I say about scott there are so many things I guess first I loved his laugh it would just put a smile on everyones face speaking of smiles scott would always have a smile which would just brighten the room. He was always caring of me, I loved how he loved the raiders and everytime they score he would play ac/dc it was so funny. Well scott is just that type of guy loving, caring, and friendly. He was a loving husband, a good son, a good brother, and a true friend. REST IN PEACE SCOTT WE LOVE YOU!

Scott you will be remembered always, that was so evident at the funeral when I saw how many people you touched even if it was for a short time. When I saw your fellow HCPD brothers and sisters salute you as the hearse pulled in front of the church it broke my heart. It seemed like a dream that this could not actually be. Rest easy your fellow brothers and sisters at HCPD are keeping the watch here and I know they will keep your memory alive forever. You are so missed.

Tracy our hearts ache for you to see you go through such pain. I wish there was something we could do to take away your pain but I know there isn't. Just know like everyone else we are here for you, scott's parents, and michael no matter what. Just remember always look to the rainbows and there you will see Scott.

Everytime someone so special leaves us, our hearts break a little. May we never ever forget this pain. It serves as a reminder to never forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and reminds us to love our friends and family and never take anything for granted. Life holds no guarantees so live each day to the fullest.
We will pray for you Tracy and for Scott's family.

Scott …..Tonight is my first shift at work since you left. I knew it would be difficult but I could not anticipate or imagine how hard it would be. It's a good thing that it has been pretty busy tonight. The work has been keeping my mind off the sadness of lossing you. I've been kind of avoiding the spots where we used to do paperwork, eat or look for speeders. It's still painful. I've even waited for a call from you on the cell phone or the computer, only to quickly realize that things have changed now.

I remember when you came to the squad as new police officer. You worked hard and you made an impact in your patrol area with your presence. There were some mistakes made along the way, as we all make them in this line of work. That's why I made it a priority to let you know that I made some mistakes too and talked with you at length about it. It's good to see that you remained positive and remembered that you can do this stuff and have fun too.

We have gone through a lot together. I have learned from you just as I hope that you have picked up a few tricks from me. I will miss harassing you about your calls to Tracy late at night. I know that she is the love of your life. That was evident when I saw you stress out about making her Valentines Day perfect. It would have been neat to see you guys have children because I know that you would have been the best father.

It was hard to see you go the way you did. As I reflect on your life, I can see why you worked so hard and played so hard. I know now that you were living life to the fullest. The last time I spoke to you was at the end of a long shift and I told you to take it easy. Now you will get your well deserved rest. I'm glad that God gave me and my family a chance to know you and be in your company, even for a short time. We all loved and cared for you and I know you felt it when you were in the hospital. We also have to remember that God loves you most so he called you home.

I know we will meet again. You won't be hard to find. You will probably have your wings painted silver and black and sport another Raiders tattoo on your arm. We will greet each other and have a real good laugh. Rest in peace my brother in blue.

I have known several officers killed in the line of duty. This Officer's death is all the more tragic because of the nature of the cause of his death. MSP and officers from other agencies regularly perform stationary radar throughout Maryland. I have personally seen MSP Troopers and members of the QAC Sherrif's Dept. step out in front of highway traffic to indicate a motorist to pull off to the side of the road. Sometimes, these motorists do not pay attention and sometimes, the Officer is so set and focused on making that individual stop that they don't pay attention to the danger that they are placing themselves in. There has got to be better training and a better way or more efficient procedures for Offciers working stationary radar. Stepping out onto a major highway in front of speeding traffic does not seem like an efficient or safe way to conduct traffic stops. The madness has got to stop and Officers need to be better trained in this area. It is just sad that Officer Wheeler had to pay the ultimate price befor this change in leadership and/or training / protocol could be put into place. God Bless you, Officer Wheeler.

Scott, I was heart broken the day you were struck by that car. I always figured that we all can get hurt but never die. Now I know that we are all not invincible. We all carry that feeling close. We are better cops and more importantly better people now. There is a hole in this Department that will never heal. We all carry that scar and if there is anything at all posible positive out of this horrible tragedy, we are more careful as we have seen our own mortality. I know you still have our backs. You will be missed. I know in my heart that we will all see you again when we follw you to Heaven and into the warm embrace of God. Godspeed brother. You will never be forgotten.

Tracy, words cannot help you in this desparate time. Just know that there are at least 390 of us praying for you and are here to help with anything you need.

A Police Officer's Prayer
When I am needed for duty God, and
someone has to call, give me strength to
save a life, or soften someone's fall.
If neighbors need a helping hand or
just a friendly pat, fill my heart
with love---so I can give them that.
God, staying by my side with your holy light,
and guide my footsteps so I
do all things right.
I want to fill my calling and give the
best in me, to gaurd my every neighbor
and protect his property.
At the end of each day let me look back
and find, that I fulfilled my job
proudly with a satisfied mind
And if, according to my fate, I am to lose
my life; please bless with you
protecting hand my loving Family.

***You will be greatly missed Scott***
May we meet again in heaven, but until then
you'll be riding shot gun with me as I cross
the finish line**

Police Officer's Wife Prayer
I am a Policeman's Wife
The table's set, the meal's prepared,
and our guests will soon arrive.
My husband once more disappears with
the hope of keeping a child alive.
While waiting at home alone,
our plans have gone awry.
My first response is to
sit right down and cry.
But soon again I relize
the importance of my life,
When I agreed to take on the duties
of being a Policeman's Wife.
While there may be drawbacks,
I'll take them in my stride
Knowing "My Daddy saves life's",
our children will say with pride.
Speeding cars or flying bullets
may be his final fate,
But with God's help, I can remain
my Policeman's faithful mate.

Scott,

I am blessed that I did get to meet you. At the mall of course. As a dispatcher, you always wonder what the person on the other end of the radio looks like. I used to ask Mary Levy all the time, "what does he look like because he has that sexy voice on the radio"? :-) Anyway, you never gave any problems on the radio at all. When you were called, you went with no hesitation. Except for those 0400 hour calls. You know, when I had to call you like 3 times. Dispatch to 2C41, Dispatch to 2C41, 2C41111111!!! :-) I always joked about that. Anyway, for me, you will always be the ultimate "2C41" and i will absolutely positively miss that voice on my radio. My heart is bleeding for you and your family. Selfishness makes it hard to say that you're in a better place now, but you are. God Bless You and Thank you.

Tracy,
My heart is just breaking for you. I know that no amount of support or love you receive right now will lessen your pain. I know that you are hurting immensely. We are hurting for you. When we buried our six year old son, Scott told us "Don't cry for him, smile for him because you know he is safe and loved where he is at." He also reminded us how we are all just passing through this life. He was so right. I think a lot of us take that for granted. Scott really left a mark on everyone he met. And YOU made the biggest mark on him. Mike and I are thankful that you made him so happy. This pain will never go away but it will get easier. Keep the memories close at heart. Know that Mike and I are here if you need anything at all no matter how big or small. We will pray for you, your in laws and brother in law to get through this as Scott would want you to. I know he is so PROUD of that service held in his honor. It was beautiful. You are in our hearts and prayers. {{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}

Scott,

Although we worked opposite nightshifts, I did have the opportunity to work with you a few times. One night that stands out in my mind was when we responded to Overheart Ln what seemed like a million times to chase off the regulars until they got the picture. Thanks for backing me up. We did a foot patrol together and that night you told me some stories about work and gave me words of wisdom, as a new officer I really appreciated that. It's just hard to believe you are gone, but you definitely won't be forgotten. It's impossible with that goofy laugh of yours that made everyone else laugh. Rest easy in Heaven, Scott.

Dispatchers are we, starting our 12 hour shifts,
reviewing our lineups, preparing for all the "what ifs".
Knowing what officers in our areas are working,
searching all the calls, for possible dangers that maybe lurking.
Knowing far too well, a low priority call, can change in a moment, with horrors that befall.
The most precious sound that each of us hears,is the 3 little words advising, " I am 10-4", in our ears.
We are but messengers with information, relating the calls, but our officers safety is what matters most of all.
Corporal Scott Allen Wheeler, you gave the ultimate sacrifice, in protecting the citizens from their own possible demise.
Your funeral, what an honor it was just to be there.
To see and hear all the tributes, that echoed through the air.
I pray for your Wife, Parents, Brother, family and friends,
and the citizens that you protected, as their loss is without end.
Your Brother and Sister Officers are heartbroken and torn, they are all filled with sadness, with your passing, that they mourn.
Dispatchers are we, hidden away in our room.
You brought vision to our eyes, your sweet voice never sounding gloom.
When a call would go out, your voice was always one of the first ones we would hear, saying " C41 to dispatch, I have the back", and never with fear.
What an honor it was to of worked with you over the 5 years I've been here.
I knew not your face, but your voice, I'll always hold dear.
Rest easy and peacefully in the clouds high above, where the Angels cradle you softly, in wings softer then doves.
May your family and friends be comforted with Gods' Grace, and his Love, as he holds you gently, forever 10-4, in the Heavens above.

Scott,

Everyday for the past 18 years and 6 months, before putting on my headset, I have prayed for the safe return of "my" officers at the end of their shift. On June 16, 2007, I received the transmission that I have always hoped I would never, ever receive; "Officer Down."
It was and will always be my extreme honor and privilege to have been the one on the radio during your last tour serving the citizens of Howard County, and I pray that my voice was in some very small way a comfort. God Bless.

Scott-
I will never forget that day. That Saturday, I logged on to a news website simply to get the weather for the following day. To my shock, on the home page was a picture of you. I couldn't believe it. What I read made me begin to sob. I immediately called my ex-husband, David, to tell him that one of his best friends, a man that he grew up with, was hit by a car and flown to shock trauma. He didn't believe me. "Nahh" he said, "It must be someone else, Scott and Tracy were just here 3 days ago." But he soon learned that it was.
I'll never forget the many many weekends of playing cards and drinking games in my living room. Or going camping in Chincoteague. My kids called you "Uncle Scott" cuz you were part of the family. My heart it breaking for Tracy, but I know that you are surrounding her with your love even now. Rest easy now Scott. Your work here is done. My God hold you close to his side.

Scott,
So where do I even start? The last five days have been a giant blur for me and I am sure for so many. It just doesn't seem real. How can you be gone? I would be lying if I said I was being strong at this time. I just can't seem to grasp the fact that you are really gone. Over the last few days I have sat back and thought of many of the good times we shared. That trip to Daytona will be a memory I hold close forever. I was hoping we would get to do it again someday. Then there was your 21rst birthday at our house....that was one heck of party. We never again had another party like that. And then the time you and Chad didn't have a place to stay in O.C so you came to our room and slept on the balcony. Man that was funny. You made us all laugh. I am so deeply saddened that I wont hear that laugh again. That and the way you always shouted "Get some" out of nowhere. All I know is you were a great friend and I am sad that you were taken from us all way too soon. Your wife had me in tears at the hospital. When I look at her I see that you were her everything. I know you would want her to be strong Scott but God she misses you so much. We all do. You touched a lot of people with your humor and kindness, more then you probably know. I hope something good will come of your passing. I know you would not want this to happen again. Please watch over us as we go on without you. Always a friend. Big Durb

Scott,
Today you leave us for good, and it still doesn't seem real to me, I keep thinking that I'm going to wake up and everything will be the way it was. Scott was more then a friend to me he was like a little brother that I watched out for, even though he was 8 days older then me. Scott could always make you laugh even when you when you were mad at him, and you would know his laugh without even seeing him. Scott and I met in the Academy and went every where from their together, to the same night shift squad (P3C) to SWAT School, eventually making the team together. I still remember when my daughter was born Scott and Tracey coming to the hospital in Baltimore in the middle of the night during a hurricane, just to bring my wife food! What type of person does that, but a brother! I LOVE YOU MY BROTHER AND I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!!!

TEARS FOR A LOST OFFICER

He is willing to be hurt or killed for someone he does'nt even know.
He is not always sure why they are dying but they are.
Could be a normal traffic stop or a drug bust, or something like that.
You never think about it, till it is too late, you lay there losing your life.
Your friends and co-workers stand around you, trying to help you.
You know they are doing their best but it is not enough.
As things grow dark you think of all your good and bad moments in life.
You hear them say "EMS is on they way they will be here in a few minutes."
But you know that will not be good enough, they are going to be too late, to save your life.
you try to tell them not to cry, you will be alright you are going to a better place, where you can't die.
If you must cry, let it only be a little, you don't want them hurting.
You know the end is here, as you try to tell your friends and co-workers good-bye, on the dark shoulder of the express way, but you can't say the words.
As things go dark you prepare yourself for the end of your life.
AS A SINGLE TEAR FALLS DOWN YOUR CHEEK, YOUR ONLY WAY TO SAY GOOD-BYE TO YOUR FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS.

REST IN PEACE SCOTT.

Scott,

It is hard to believe that you were just working a trade of shift with me the other week and now you are gone. I will never forget that laugh and the way it made everyone smile. I still remember getting a phone call from you after my son, Peyton, was born. You told me that you thought Peyton was a cool name and he was an ok quarterback even though he was not a Raider. You then tried to convince me that I should change Peyton's name to Howie. Since the day I met you I have never been able to look at the Black and Silver without thinking of you. It was a pleasure to have the chance to work with you and it was an HONOR to call you a friend. You will NEVER be forgotten. I just pray you don't scare Saint Peter when you walk up to the Gates of Heaven wearing your Raider Face Paint and Spiked Shoulder Pads.
God Bless You and Your Family!

Wheeler Family,

I'm very sorry for your loss. As a mother of an officer it is always concerning when our loved ones go off to work. I always keep in my mind that this job is my sons dream since he was a small child. I've read the posts and see this was also Scott's dream. I'm proud of my son, all public servants, and especially Scott. They serve our community, sacrifice their lives, to make Howard County one of the best places to live and work.

Scott-I first met you and your wonderful wife, Tracy, through my fiancee, PFC Mark Baxter. During that first meeting, we were all celebrating the successful completion of SWAT school for you, Mark, and the other graduates. I went home that night telling Mark how much I really liked you and Tracy and hoped the four of us could get together again. Since that first meeting, I had the good fortune of enjoying your good humor and likeable spirit on several occasions. Whether you dropped by our home to borrow a movie, enjoy some leftovers from our dinner during your shift or to simply help Mark out, you always came with a smile and made me consistenly laugh. You were a good friend to Mark and it pains me deeply to know the hurt Tracy, your family, Mark, and all HCPD members are experiencing at this time. You will always, always be in our prayers and thoughts.
May God bless you, Tracy and your family,

Scott, When you finished your basement I realized how passionate you were about those Raiders but it wasn't just the Raiders you were passionate about everything in your life.

I remember watching you, for over an hour standing in front of Marcus Allen at the SB MVP, Signing last year in NJ. You were the first in line and he intially turned you down for a picture with him, but you were determine. You stood strong taking pictures at the table and wouldn't bugde as the freenzy of people trying to see him sqeezed and bumped by you. When the crowd was gone I remember him having this look of relief on his face as he talked with agent and then turned back towards your direction, looked right at you and said "You still standing there?"

Out of the hundreds of people that didn't suceed you got your photo with Allen and the smile and laughter from that momment rode all the way down 95 with us.

Scott, I wish I had more stories and made more time to be a closer friend to you and Tracy, however, because of you I know your loving parents, they are so proud of you Scott,... We All are So Proud of You !

Rest in Peace Brother

Endless Tears

Endless tears,

Through the years,

Rain down

Falling, without sound.

Tracing the names

Etched in the memorial wall,

Slowly, endlessly,

Sad tears fall.

Some of the names,

Appear to fade away,

Washed by the falling tears

Of today and yesterday.

My sad tears

Fall here too,

A part of the endless rain

Cried by the widows of the blue.

Scott,
I realize you are in a better place and are no longer suffering. However, it is still difficult to come to realize that you are gone. I was Scott's Field Training Officer for HCPD. He was a hard working (always volunteering for OT positions) Police Officer who glowed with passion for the job. I still have the Dale Jr shirt that you asked me to pick-up for you at the Dover Race two weeks ago. This will always remind me of you!
God Bless and looking forward to seeing you again one day.

"Policeman's Prayer"

When I start my tour of duty God,
Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.

Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.

Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.

I can't believe that when I spoke with you on the phone on Friday night it would be the last time I heard your voice. I will never forget your infectious laugh and your bad impersonations. I can still remember when you were not allowed into Heinz field becuase you insisted on wearing your spiked Raiders shoulder pads. You were the hardest worker I have ever met and embodied what an Officer should strive to be like. You will truly be missed by all of your brothers in blue. I am so thankful I was able to know you. I found this poem and wanted to share with everyone.

"The Thin Blue Line"

There is a line
the color of the sky
on a clear afternoon
There is a line
the hue of the ocean on a bright sunny day
There is a line
the purest shade of a newborn's eyes
awakening for the first time
There is a line
that protects us from harm
in all we do
wether day or night
There is a line
no one can penetrate
no one can alleviate
There is a line
made of those who choose
to follow a calling many do not hear
and still more do not comprehend
They choose to walk
the path of fear, hate, and mistrust
taken by so few
but marked by so many
And when one leaves this line
they leave a legacy
but the line does not break
for the remaining must still protect
There may be emptiness
a loss, or sadness
but never a hole
not in this line
This line that holds
the ghosts of the souls who have gone
and the sould of the ghosts who will be
The Thin Blue Line

Scott-
Man the nights we hung out on Rowanberry...feels like last weekend! You always had a great sense of humor. I remember seeing you and Tracy hanging out on Rowanberry and could tell how much you cared for her.
This place is hurting...I'm not even sure it has really sunk in yet. These next two days are going to be even tougher. I think that your laugh and smile will help me to get through the service. I never imagined that this could happen. We always tell ourselves that it can happen, but not to one of ours. You were the best this department had to offer. I don't remember ever hearing you say a bad thing about someone else. You worked hard and played hard!
You were a great guy and we are all going to miss ya! We will look out for Tracy, Mike and your parents....you look out for all of us!

God Bless You!

Our brother has been taken and gently laid to rest; Fate seems so cruel at times to only take the best. While those who care for no one are left to walk life's street; Bringing less joy than sorrow to those whose path they meet. Our brother lives forever if only in our minds; He'll never be forgotten nor ever left behind. He'll stand before us always as if to guide our way; Through all our tasks and duties awaiting us each day. Our brother has been taken and though we wonder why; We'll still perform our duties as days then weeks go by. We'll travel where fate leads, through days of dark or fair; Until we stand for Roll Call beside our brother there!

I worked with Scott the last 6 years. Scott was a true friend and I can't really put into words what he meant to me and all of us who worked with him. I will miss the friday phone calls during football season wondering if it was wise to take the Raiders as 14 point underdogs. I will miss his laugh and bringing him lunch at Crazy Rays. I will miss talking about stupid movie quotes and hanging out at the church at 3 in the morning. I will miss the voice mails he left me, and the good times we had tailgaiting. I will miss the simple ways every day he made our world a better place to live. Rest in peace brother.

Everytime I saw Scott he made me smile and laugh. That was Scott. I last saw Scott on Monday two weeks ago. Scott and another brother were trying to explain, and show me, how great it was to have a NASCAR package that allowed you to follow a live race over your cell phone. They were huddled around the phone in a trance. I still don't understand NASCAR. Scott was a hard working dedicated Officer. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten. Scott,
Most people will feel they have had a good life if they have made a difference in someone’s life. Although I did not know you well, other than to hear your laugh from down the hall, or to see you smiling while doing your impersonations in de-briefing and a few details we worked together, I have spent the last week talking with and helping your friends grieve. There is no doubt you have made a difference in their lives and those of this community that you served. Whether she will ever believe it or not you died while trying to save the life of the motorist you were trying to stop and the lives of the people who were sharing the road with her at the time. I hope that your family can take comfort in knowing you died not only doing something that you loved and had a passion for but trying to make a difference in the lives of complete strangers.

To your family, friends, and our HCPD family I wish all of you peace and may God bless and keep each of you.

Scott, I met you when Gordy took some leave and I was your FTO for a few days. It was hilarious watching you write tickets and warnings. I don't know what language you wrote them in but it certainly wasn't English.

You had a hard time calling out your traffic stops. So I thought we would go to another channel and have some fun pulling over Corey. Most guys would have got frustrated and angry after pulling over the same white Crown Vic for an hour. Not you. You told me you appreciated the help and thanked me afterwards.

A few years ago my brother died. We used to go to metal concerts a couple times a year. The last time I saw him was at Thunderdome, a little hole in the wall in Baltimore. A year after he died, you and I were sitting at the same barstools my brother and I did. I don't think I ever told you how much I appreciated that. Thanks Scott.

A few years later I met your brother at another concert we went to. I saw how close you two were and it reminded me of how my brother and I were. Thanks again Scott. We'll keep an eye out for Mike, he has a lot more brothers now to help look after him if he needs it.

I realize you loved this job, but I am sorry it took you away from your family and friends.

You were the friendliest guy I know on the department. But, you were still tough and cut the knuckleheads no slack.

Rest now Scott, you don't have to work the overtime anymore.

Officer Wheeler - I used to live in your district. My husband is a Montgomery County police officer. We have recently suffered the tragic loss of PO Luke Hoffman (EOW 4/26/2007). I am sure he welcomed you in heaven! Though I did not know you personally, I know many wonderful and courageous men like you, and I know that your passing has cast a shadow over Maryland law enforcement. You are sorely missed.

Mrs. Wheeler - I cannot imagine the horror and sorrow of losing your husband. You have woken up to the nightmare we all hope to avoid. We are praying for you and all your loved ones as you deal with this loss. I hope you find some comfort in the fact that the entire police community is here to support you through this time.

Scotts death takes a little piece of each of us. It doesn't matter if you are on the job today, or were on the job five years ago, we all wore the same uniform and it hurts. I pray each day for all my HCPD brothers and sisters, active and retired, to stay safe. My prayers were not answered in this case, but all things have a purpose, even if we don't understand them at the time. I will honor Scott by getting up each day and being the best person I can be, and by continuing to support everything that he stood for.

Scott
From your first day in the Academy to 3 years of night shift, I never saw this day coming. From early morning phone calls and MDT messages about breakfast at Chick Filla to constant salutes in the hallway with me saying Dude, stop you're embarassing me to you saying " I can't you're my hero"...I never saw this day coming. Dude, you are my hero and a wild man and I will never forget you.

As a dispatcher for the county, I too feel the loss of a family member, our police family. Scott was a sweet guy, always polite on the radio and did not give any grief when given a call to go do whatever was requested. I remember many conversations over the phone, either work related or just to say hello. People come into our lives for a reason and while they are with us, we make memories with them that stay with us for a lifetime. I did not know Scott personally, but I knew him professionally and I feel honored to have known him. He will be missed, but his kindness and bashful smile will always be remembered.

To my brother in blue.
Scott, I did not know you as well as your close friends and family, but feel a great loss as they are feeling. I had the honor of working with you on that tragic day and would do anything to change the events of that sad day. My life has forever changed because of the events of this tragic incident. For those that have never served in our Profession I’m sure they find it difficult to fathom such a loss that we feel. My prayers will also be with you and your family. May you rest in peace. The Thin Blue Line will never be broken.

Scott- I can’t believe that you’re gone…you & I were just patrolling together a few weeks ago when you picked up an overtime shift with my squad. I never could have imagined that it would be the last. Nor could I have ever imagined that the dinner we all shared at Erik’s a few months ago would be the last time I saw you & Tracy together. In the six years that I’ve known you, the thing that comes to my mind the most is the same thing that everyone who knows you remembers about you- your crazy laugh and constant smile! Needless to say, the times I remember with you were mostly that- full of laughs and lightheartedness. We did endure SWAT school together, yet we were still able to find time to laugh between carrying the pole and shoulder circles! There are so many great stories with you in them Scott…that’s just what you brought to the people who were lucky enough to spend time with you. You could light up a room with you humor, make people laugh on a bad day, and just cause an uplifting attitude to those around you. You loved your job, and never once did I ever hear you complain. You were always there for people when something came up and a shift needed to be covered. Your willingness to help will always be remembered. Thank you for all you’ve done and for being you. Although we never got to say goodbye, I know you are in Heaven watching over us all. You have impacted more people than you could ever imagine. You are a true hero and an inspiration to all of us.

I am so proud to be able to say that I was your friend.

You will never be forgotten- May you rest in peace.

We love you Scott…

May God Comfort your wife, your parents, your brother, family and friends. My prayers go out to all of them, and to all of your fellow Brother and Sister Officers. "The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Even though I have only known you through family connections, I have heard your voice many of times on the radio. Being a new dispatcher, less than 2 years, I have not had the opportunity to know the police officers face to face, but I do know that you were kind and understanding when I was in training, not getting frustrated when I made a mistake or asked you to repeat your request. Everyday, when I hear 10-42 I always assumed you would be 10-41 the next day. I know you are 10-41, just not on earth, but in heaven watching all of your brothers and sisters, your loving wife, and your family. Thank you Officer Wheeler, for you great service to all in Howard County. You will never be forgotten and always prayed for.

Where to begin? Although we only had the chance to work together a few times, you were always great to work with. Several people have commented about your laugh and smile and as I described the type of person you were to my husband those where the first words that came out. "Scott had the goofiest laugh and smile and I would also just roll my eyes".

It's not fair that you have been taken from us. Yet God has called you to walk his streets in heaven. Thank you for leaving your smile imbedded in our hearts.

Scott, you will always be remembered by your fellow Brothers and Sisters here at HCPD. Being a police officer is a calling - not a job. You answered the call in an admirable and heroic manner. You paid the ultimate price
and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

I will always remember your contagious laugh and your bright smile - every time you gave a smile, you got one
back!

God, our Father, has called you Home because your work
here on Earth is done. You will forever be remembered
as a young and vibrant police officer. As Heaven's newest
Guardian Angel, along with our other Guardian Angels Randy and Roger, please watch over us all. Your spirit will continue to walk the halls at Southern District and we will feel your presence often.

You worked so hard for the short time you were here. You deserve to rest in peace for all eternity, seated at the Right Hand of the Father.

forever and ever. Amen."

Scott,
I don’t know where to start. This all seems like really bad nightmare. I can clearly remember giving you an ear full for not taking the corporals test, but you would thwart my scornful efforts in you own humorous ways. I think it’s the little things about you Scott I’m going to miss the most, like your unshaken loyalty towards those awful Oakland Raiders, your unique laugh and the trail of bird seeds that were a tell tale sign you were in the area. I’m also going to miss seeing your caring nature, your professionalism & courage and how a great cop should work. The citizens of the United States, the great State of Maryland and of Howard County has suffered a great loss when you were taken from us, because the real hero’s are not on TV or in the movies there right here on the front line where you were. Your co-workers/friends are hurting right now Scott, but need not worry. We will pick up the torch and carry on where you left off, because that’s what you would have wanted us to do. I don’t think I’ve cried this much in sometime and pretty sure there’s more to come. We can never ever forget you Scott, because you were not only a cop, but a good friend and a good person. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

The tears flowed like a river,
streaming down my face.
Another brother, another sister gone,
you got your call to a much better place.
The sky was blue and the sun was shining,
your time to go had such bad timing.
You should of had a long time to drift,
But for you - now we will finish the shift.
Now when We think of you -- We think good thoughts.
We love you and miss you lots.
It's awful to think how your life was taken away,
But, now I know no harm can be done to you today.

SCOTT WAS A GOOD OFFICER AND FRIEND. HE WILL BE MISSED GREATLY. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYER GO OUT TO HIS WIFE AND HIS FAMILY. HE WAS A GREAT GUY AND AVID FOOTBALL FAN. I ONLY HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH HIM A FEW TIMES WHEN HE WORKED OVERTIME WITH MY SQUAD. HE WORKED NIGHTS AS I DO BUT DIIFERENT NIGHT. OPOSITE OF MY SCHEDULE. I ALWAYS TALKED FOOTBALL WITH HIM WHEN I WOULD SEE HIM IN COURT. SCOTT WAS A DIE HARD OAKLAND RAIDERS FAN.SCOTT LOVED FOOTBALL AND HE DID HAVE RAVENS SEASON TICKETS.I WOULD SEE HIM AT THE RAVENS GAMES AND HE WOULD BE DRESSED UP IN HIS SILVER AND BLACK.IF THE RAVENS WEREN'T PLAYING THE RAIDERS I WOULD JOKE WITH HIM AND TELL HIM HE WAS AT THE WRONG GAME. HE HAD A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR AND WAS A GREAT GUY. HE LOVED TO LAUGH. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO HIS WIFE AND FAMILY. GOD BLESS, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN AND ALWAYS MISSED. FOR YOU SCOTT GO RAIDERS!

To the family, friends, and officers that knew PFC Wheeler, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.

Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest

The following is a Fallen Officer's Prayer that was found while a Pueblo Police Officer visited the N.Y.P.D. Museum & Ground Zero in 2005 Officer's Prayer

Fallen Officer’s Prayer

I Never Dreamed It Would Be Me.
My Name For All Eternity.
Recorded Here At This Hallowed Place.
Alas, My Name, No More My Face.
'In The Line of Duty' I Hear Them Say.
My Family Now The Price To Pay.
My Folded Flag Stained With Their
Tears.
We Only Had Those Few Short Years.
The Badge No Longer On My Chest.
I Sleep Now In Eternal Rest.
My Sword I Pass To Those Behind And
Pray They Keep This Thought In Mind.
I Never Dreamed It Would Be Me.
And With A Heavy Heart And Bended
Knee, I Ask For All Here From The
Past...
Dear God, Let My Name Be The Last.
To all the family, friends, and all who wear the badge of law enforcement we send these meager words.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

My heartfelt sympathy to PFC Scott Wheelers' Family,Friends and Colleagues. I am a dispatcher for Howard County Police and I can personally say, PFC Scott Wheeler was an awesome person and a professional! Although Scott has answered his last call he will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

When a good friend of mine, Montgomery County Police Officer Luke Hoffman was killed in the line of duty less than two months ago, I found this poem on his memorial page. I read it often and try to find peace in his tragedy. I have attached it and hope that you too will find peace. PFC Scott Wheeler, you are a true hero! GOD SPEED.

"My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother
